PS.

This is my Simpsons movie poster. This shows I can use photoshop. I copied images from online and used them in this poster by adding new layers and eventually flattening them all to create one image. I used all the conventions appropriately so that it looks professional. i used the Lasso Tool to remove any of the unwanted areas and the backgrounds this makes the picture look more like a film poster because all the images fit together. I also used the text tool from photoshop to write on the date of the movie so it fits all the conventions of a original film poster. lastly i only added images that would refer to the film which made it look more official.

International Publishing Company IPC Media is one of the United Kingdom's leading consumer magazine and digital publishers, with a large portfolio selling over 350 million copies each year.

IPC Media groups titles under five magazine divisions: Connect (women's weeklies such as Now Magazine and Look), Inspire (leisure and specialist), Ignite! (men's lifestyle and entertainment), SouthBank (women's lifestyle and home interest) and TX (portfolio of television titles). In addition, there is Marketforce, the UK's leading magazine distribution business. Digitally they have WOTV and goodtoknow. International Publishing Company

Music Magazines they own: NME and Guitar and Bass International Publishing Company

Bauer Media Group Is a large German publishing company based in Hamburg, which operates in 15 countries worldwide. Since the company was founded in 1875, it has been privately-owned and under management by the Bauer family. It was formerly called Heinrich Bauer Verlag KG , abbreviated to HBV and usually shortened to H. Bauer.

The Music Magazines this publisher provides are: Q MOJO and KERRANG All three are advertised on their website as being men’s magazines. Bauer Media Group

Emap Emap was the second largest magazine publisher in UK with about 18% of the news-stand market by revenue (to IPC/Time Warner's 20%). However, in July 2007, the company announced a strategic review. The result was that the company was split up and sold off in December:

The business-to-business magazines were sold to Guardian Media Group and private equity firm Apax - which owns Incisive - for £1bn. The new company is to be called Incisive-Emap. its consumer magazines and radio arm, including Kiss and Magic, went to Bauer for £1.14 billion - making the German magazine publisher the largest in Britain.

Development Hell Ltd Set up by ex-Emap executives David Hepworth, Jerry Perkins, Mark Ellen and Andrew Harrison. Business plan to launch three magazines over six years. First launch, in March 2003, was Word , focusing on music and entertainment: 'New! Something to read !' screamed the cover. Bought clubbing magazine Mixmag from Emap in November 2005. The Guardian Media Group took a 14% share in the company in July 2004.

If i was choosing a magazine institution i would Bauer media group this is because they have published magazine such as MOJO and KERRANG which both have inspired me when considering making a magazine. I love the layout of these magazines so i would choose this institution.

Analyze Results

This print screen shows the results i got from my online survey about how much people would be willing to pay for a music magazine. the best response i got was between £3 and £4 this suggests to me that my survey was done my a more middle class audience who are willing to pay extra money for a good quality music magazine. These results will help me when making my magazine because i will know how much to charge.

This print screen shows the results from my online survey showing how much time people listen to music each week. Most people got 5-7 hours which shows my target audience are big music listeners so my magazine should include a lot about new single and album releases. This is 71.43% which reflects around 3/4 of my audience.

Question Number 1
what is your gender?
28.57% of my survey were males and 71.43% of my survey were females, this means I will attract my magazine to a mainly female audience.

Question 2.
How old are you ?
100% of the people who answered my survey were 16-20 years old this will be the age bracket for my target audience considering this research will allow me to learn about their likes and dislikes.

question 3.
Do you read magazines if yes please give an example?
the main answers I got from this was NME, Mojo and Kerrang these magazines all direct to a certain music genre so if I incorporate all of these elements into my own magazine I should generate a wider audience and be able to go up against the competition that already exists on the market.

question 4.
What music do you prefer? here I gave options but the highest percentage genre was Rock with a score of 85.71% from this it is evident this will be the genre I use on my magazine, however the second highest was punk, so I can make this my sub genre.

question 5.
How much money would you pay for a music magazine?
With this I got some variation is results however most people said from £3 to £4 suggesting to me the audience expect a high quality product.

question 6.
How many gigs/festivals have you attended?
Most people answered 7-9 meaning it would be a good idea to make this a feature of my magazine possibly doing reviews or news of upcoming gigs/festivals.

question 7.
Do you have hobbies if so state them below?
I got a very varied response here, this is because I made it an open question to get separate views. the responses I got back were Xbox, dancing, reading, Music, singing and drawing, to me this suggests my target audience are very creative which means I will ensure my magazine has a creative flair to attract this audience. These are also very girly things meaning I will aim at the female audience primarily.

question 8.
What is your favourite band/artist?
Again I got varied responses due to this being an open question. My responses reflect the Rock genre of music, I got slipknot, Foo fighters, Olly Murs, you me at six, the script, my chemical romance, fall out boy and Nirvana. This is predominantly of the rock genre therefore I will produce a magazine that fits this.

question 9.
what do you look for in a magazine?
I asked this question to get new ideas of what to put in my magazine. my responses were tour dates, short news stories, albums, a creative front cover. This allows me to improve my ideas and get a better idea of what my target audience want.

question 10.
how long do you spend listening to music per week?
this question allows me to find out if my audience are frequent music listeners. I found out that the majority of people who answered my survey said 5-7 hours per week (71.43%) this shows me they are quite frequent listeners therefore may be interested in reading more about it in a new magazine.

These results have helped me to get to know more about my target audience and what to actually include in my final product.

survey gender results

This is a pie chart from my online survey. Overall i got almost 3 quarters females answering my questionnaire this will help to make my magazine by aiming for a certain gender.

My Survey

This is a link for my online questionnaire, by doing it online I get a wider range of people answering it. Online means it can be from different areas as well as my local area. This shows the questions that I have asked the public online. This will help me because it will give me results that I can use constructively to produce my magazine as I will know what my target audience likes and dislikes, therefore allowing me to produce a magazine that would be purchased.

I also put the link for my survey on Twitter, this form of social media allows the questions to open up to a wider audience and not just in my small area.

For this survey I used qualitative and quantitative questions. This limited some of the questions and allowed the audience to write their own opinion in others. quantitative and qualitative approaches are strongly associated with objectivity (quantitative) and subjectivity (qualitative).  Quantitative questions allow Control and the ability to use statistical techniques to get an overall clear answer however they can be limited because it fails to take into account that people may have different views. Whereas Qualitative can gain the audiences personal views and opinions but  because of the subjective nature of qualitative data, it is difficult to apply conventional standards of reliability and validity.

I chose these certain questions because I feel I will be able to produce an overall better magazine by finding out more about who my target audience are.

reader profile

NME reader profile

this is the music magazine NME's reader profile this shows the interests and reflects the attitudes that their target audience may have. it shows things such as new technology implying a younger more technologically advanced generation. Furthermore it shows clothes and shops which their reader may shop at. From this reader profile I would say it was mainly aimed at boys because of the colours being blue stereotypically a boys colour and things such as cars and an Xbox generally associated with boys.

Deconstruction No.3

Deconstruction No.3

Double page spread:

Masthead: the masthead is frank Iero is the top left 3rd of the corner of the double page spread this is exactly how you would read a book so it informs the reader straight away who this article is about and if they would want to read it or not. The lettering used is in bold capitals this is used so it is Immediately seen by the reader. the colour used for the masthead is blue, this stands out from the background very nicely and the use of a black outline makes it even more eye-catching.

Main image:
The image used for this article is of the artist Frank Iero it is a mid shot of him however it takes up all of the page and the article is on top of the image. the mode of address used is direct this shows eye contact with the reader making it feel more personal to them. Frank is dressed very casual and natural showing the readers the normal side of celebrities. There are no eccentric costumes used so it isn't over the top and looks very professional. it also reflects on the genre of music that this magazine does.

Main cover line:
the main cover line for this article is 'holding out for an Iero' this is a play on words (pun) which makes the article for jovial and comical straight away and makes the reader interested in the story. The colours used for this is yellow which is a very bright and vibrant colour making these qualities reflect on the story. The main cover line takes up about one third of a single page making it impossible not to see, Iero is placed in a larger font because he is the main story and 'Iero' is where the pun is instead of hero.

Teaser
This is placed under the main cover line and gives us a little glimpse of what the article is going to contain but without giving to much away. At the end of the teaser ellipsis are used to created tension and drama which makes the reader want to carry on reading to find out the rest of the story. In this particular teaser they have placed some words in yellow and others in white this highlights the important parts of the article and shows the main things it is about.

Deconstruction No.2

Deconstruction No.2

Contents page:
The contents page of the kerrang magazine is very well laid out it gives an almost cluttered effect while remaining clear reading and asthetically pleasing layout. The masthead is placed in the right top third section of the magazine it says contents showing clearly what the page is to the reader, it is in white lettering with a black circle shape around it this use of colour makes it as clear as it can possibly be. Furthermore the masthead still has the sort of crack feature this is done so it reflects the genre of music, also it keeps a good consistansy throughout. Underneath the masthead head there is a tagline line this is usually used to either infrom the reader more about whats inside the magazine or to persuade them to buy it by using persuasive language. The tagline states 'What have we got for you this week?loads!' this is a good use of a rhectorical question however by answering it themseleves it shows confidence in the magazine and makes the reader want to read whats inside. The tagline is again used white lettering however this time it has a red banner surronding it and there is no cracks, this makes it clearer to read for the reader. the use of these colours again so some amount of consistancy because these colours are also used throughout the rest of the magazine reflecting the genre of the magazine and appealing to its audience.

The essential information is placed in the left top third of the page showing the date and the issue number. although this is important and 'essential information' the font used is slightly smaller because this is not what the reader cares about they want to see information about the bands they love and see images of concerts. the colours used for this are again reds and blacks keeping up with the orginal colour scheme.

The main image used for the contents page is of Simon Neil playing at leeds festival, this is again placed in the left top third of the page, this is the way you would read a book so therefore it will be the first thing that the reader looks at on the page and will persuade them to read on about all the bands at leeds festival. This is the largest image on the page because it will persuade the reader to purchase the magazine and it is one of the main stories in the magazine so it needs to be featured largely. this is image is a mid shot and the mode of address in indirect this gives a more natural effect and doesnt look like a staged image. I think a mid shot is the best camera shot used for this particular image because a mid shot shows the head and part of the body this is like if you were talking face to face with someone because you wouldnt see the lower half giving the effect that you (the reader) are close to him. On the image Simon is playing the guitar and singing into the microphone this matches with the genre of music because it shows him playing live at leeds. Underneath the image anchorage is used this helps to expand on this image more and gives hints about what the story is, therefore making the reader more interested and wanting to carry on reading.  secondry images are also used on the contents page to give the page more colour and making it more asthetically pleasing to the eye. the images are of other bands in this case they are tonight alive and of mice and men these are popular bands for this genre of music and will appeal to the target audience of teenagers to young adults (15-25 yearolds). the images are widely spread apart on the page which makes the magazine quite neat and professinal.

On the contents page a variety of fonts are used so it doesnt get mundane or boring when reading it. I think by doing this it Immediately gives the magazine a better look and makes it more interesting to read. The fonts are bigger and different for the subheadings because these explain what will be included they are also in a different colour of black and yellow which makes them stand out from the rest of the writing of the page. different sizes of writing are used across the page, this is done for importance and the larger things are usually the most interesting to the reader and what they would want to read about.

Lastly there is a box out in the bottum right third of the page this used to create a separate story on the page in this case it is advertising metallicas new movie (through the never). A box out is usually in colour and creates attention so the reader wants to look at it. this helps to create publicity for the movie without it being the main feature on the page. Overall i think that the contents page really reflects the genre of music that is in the magazine and relates to their target audience by showing there interests in the magazine so it becomes more personal.

deconstruction no.1

Deconstruction No.1

colour scheme: the colour scheme for this magazine is mainly reds, blacks and yellows this colours connate the genre of music because they show darkness and danger which I would say relates the music type. the colours all bounce of each other really well because they are bright and vibrant and stand out against each other, giving a contrast. This helps to attract buyers because it is very eye-catching and will be unique against other music magazines therefore it will appeal to the readers.

Mood board No.1

My mood board

This is my mood board it includes different things that I feel match to the rock/indie genre of music. The mood board includes images of bands, guitars, magazine mastheads, album covers, gig lists even clothes and shoes that I feel my particular audience would wear. This basically shows everything I would include in my music magazine and highlights the sort of interests people of this genre would have.

Music videos

Paramore 'Misery Business'

This is a music video from youtube of Paramore's single 'Misery business'. This band will appeal to my target audience because it is a song of the music genre (rock) that I am basing my music magazine on. I think that the colours and how the video is set out is inspiring for the fact that the colours are bright and vibrant and its in your face. I would use this band in my magazine due to the fact that they are very well known and I think they would appeal to my target audience. If this band featured in my magazine then my target audience would be more likely to purchase the magazine, therefore I think it is a good idea to feature them.

Blink 182 'Always'

Blink 182 are a very popular and well established band and appeal to a wide audience, this is because they have been going for many years now so can appeal to the younger generation or an older audience. I think it would be a good idea to feature these in my magazine because they fit the genre of music and the type of look that i am going for. This music will bring the fun an excitement to my magazine and this is reflected throughout this music video. If I included this band in my music magazine I think that it would be more likely to sell because a lot of people like this music and would like to know information about them. In my opinion Blink 182 are one of the best rock bands so therefore using only the best for my magazine will push the quality higher.

Fall out boy 'sugar were going down'

Although this is an older single from fall out boy it is a classic song in which they are remembered by. I think that Fall Out Boy will bring a comedy and jovial side to my magazine which I would like to reflect throughout. This genre of music matches what I would like to do in my magazine so I think it would be a good idea to feature them in my magazine. Fall out boy is am extremely well known band world wide which will make my magazine appeal to more people giving me a wider audience.

the style of all these videos have a story but also show the band and the instruments which highlights the genre of music and makes these videos perfect for what i want to do for my magazine.

Inspirational covers

I have searched on google for inspirational magazine covers. I have chosen 3 which i believe to be very creative and inspiring. the conventions used will help when creating my own magazine.
Kerrang!

I really like this magazine cover for kerrang magazine, this is because of how the conventions are used. This magazine cover inspires me because it matches to the genre of magazine that I was considering doing. The colour scheme used for this particular cover is black, red and white which really stand out against each other giving the magazine a contrast. Furthermore the colours have connotations of danger and darkness which reflects on the genre of music. I really love the cluttered effect used on the front cover it shows there is a lot to read about; also it makes it extremely eye-catching to the reader and immediately stands out above other magazines. I think the target audience for this magazine cover is probably teenagers to young adults (15-25 years old) which is the round about the audience I would like to base my magazine on. finally I would say this magazine inspires for for the fact that it sticks to the usual magazine conventions only making them more 'in your face' and more vibrant.

NME

This magazine really inspires me because I really like the use of the photography used, it is direct to the audience and makes it look like the band is looking directly at the audience, I like this because it makes it more attractive to the readers eyes and this is something i would defiantly use when producing my magazine cover. I really love the colour scheme used on this cover because the masthead really stands out in the bright red with the white and black outline. furthermore I like how the band is slightly covering the masthead because it shows the magazine is well established and the reader will recognise this and know it is a good quality magazine. Another convention from this front cover I like is the font, size and colour of the main title, this is because the yellow really 'pops' on top of the image of the band and if the audience likes this band then it will appeal to them hugely. Moreover the subhead also adds to the main cover line with the use of the colours as the yellow stands out on top of the red. finally I think the main image swamps the page a bit and makes it to crowded however i do like the image i think i would have had it further in the distance.

Q

I think that this magazine cover would stand out over the rest because mostly of the masthead it is in the left corner and it flows as if you were reading a book so it is the first thing that the reader will look at. The tagline is a really nice touch (discover great music) because it makes it sound like its the best music magazine to buy. the photography used here to me is really outstanding and extremely eye-catching. I love the use of the photo shoot style and how she is looking directly at the reader making it seem more personal like it was made just for the reader. I love Florence's hair here it stands out and the writing used over the top is in white so it is clear and easy to read. my favourite part of this cover is the use of the pull quote I think this drags the reader in because they get to know part of the story and want to read on (giving them a taste of whats inside) I would like to use this when producing my magazine because I think its a good persuasive technique.

Time schedule

December 9th final deadline !
Hi, welcome to my AS Media blog. I will be posting my progress throughout my year of studying Media studies. I will regularly update my blog to show the production of a music magazine.

                 The aims of the course
    • enhance candidates enjoyment and appreciation of the media and its role in their daily lives;
    • develop critical understanding of the media through engagement with media products and concepts and through the creative application of practical skills;
    • explore production processes, technologies and contexts;
    • become independent in research skills and their application.

      The brief of the course
Preliminary exercise: using DTP and an image manipulation program, produce the front page of a new school/college magazine, featuring a photograph of a student in medium close-up plus some appropriately laid-out text and a masthead. Additionally candidates must produce a DTP mock-up of the layout of the contents page to demonstrate their grasp of the program.
Main task: the front page, contents and double page spread of a new music magazine (if done as a group task, each member of the group to produce an individual edition of the magazine, following the same house style). Maximum four members to a group.
All images and text used must be original, produced by the candidate(s), minimum of FOUR images per candidate.
